Epidemiology of Influenza and Pneumonia

Influenza and pneumonia together are the leading causes of infectious disease-related mortality in the US.

In addition, influenza and pneumonia are the second leading cause of hospitalization (after childbirth) in the US, with more than 1.2 million hospitalizations annually.

In hospitalized patients with pneumonia during the 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus pandemic, a combined bacterial and viral etiology of pneumonia was documented in 30% of patients.

Mortality in patients with influenza is frequently due to the influence of pneumonia and respiratory failure. Influenza and pneumonia are associated with significant patient morbidity and mortality and significant healthcare expenditures.
